Aria At Peace

Just a short story I wrote.  I hope you like it.

The shadows called out to her. They cried of death. she yelled into the darkness to find her answers, but none came. She saw loved ones dying around her, and she was unable to do anything about it.

Dressed only in a muslin gown and bare feet she walked the shadows without a sound. What she was searching for she didn't know, but she knew it was there.

Following her instincts she walked through a group of trees. The branches loomed ominiously overhead. With the wind blowing they looked as if they would reach out and grab her despite they were to high to reach her.

She walked until she found a clearing. There she found a wolf eating what looked like a deer. She stayed hidden behind a tree not daring to move closer. She watched from her hiding place. She knew wolves usually roamed and hunted in packs. This was a single wolf. If it sensed her it didn't look up from its meal.

She could smell the blood wafting through the air even though the wind was blowing away from her. Although it was animal blood it was no less enticing. Her heart began beating hard in her chest as the hunger threatened to consume her. She had to control the urge. There was something here she was supposed to find. She could feed when she got back home. Right now she was on a quest.

It suddenly became apparent there was no sound coming from the forest. No birds were chirping, no signs of any other animal than the one still eating in front of her. The branches blowing in the wind made no sound.

The wolf, finished with its meal, looked around sniffing the air.  Aria gasped hoping it didn't find her. She wasn't sure what would happen if it did. The wolf took a step in her direction. It followed the scent to the tree she was hidden behind.

Aria peered around at the large white wolf. Its blue eyes stared at her. With slow movements she kneeled down hoping she was doing the right thing. She didn't want to offend the wolf. The wolf was now close enough she could touch it if she dared to.

To her surprise the wolf laid its head in her lap. She slowly placed her hand on its head. The fur was soft under her hand. The wolf nuzzled her hand like a puppy would nuzzle its owner. It made her feel comfortable and at ease with the silence that surrounded her. At the moment she didn't feel a lone in her quest.

Moments later her eyes became droopy. She could feel her exaustion coming quickly. She hadn't realized how long she had been searching for answers for questions she no longer remembered. Not knowing her mortality had been found she rested her head on the wolf's never to awaken in the world she was leaving. Although it wouldn't be long until she would sleep forever she smiled knowing she had found the peace she thought she would never find.
